According to the popular U.S. News and World Report annual college rankings, two of the top 10 public national universities in the United States are located in Virginia. Only the state of California can claim more public universities ranked in the top 10. The University of Virginia, a World Heritage Site founded by Thomas Jefferson, is ranked #2 and the College of William and Mary, the second-oldest college in America, is ranked #6.
Additionally, James Madison University is perennially named the #1 public master's level university in The South. Virginia is also home to the Virginia Military Institute, the oldest state military college in the U.S. and the Nation's #1 public liberal arts college for six consecutive years.[10] [11]
Virginia Commonwealth University is the largest university in Virginia with over 30,000 students,[12] followed closely by George Mason University. Virginia Tech and Virginia State University are the land-grant universities for the state.
